It’s the new age of smartphones where we see cameras of 48mp, 64mp and even 108mp. When the companies are engaged in increasing the figures in the ocean of numbers, have you ever thought why the big players, Apple iPhones, Google pixel and even Samsung have settled to 12 megapixels or 10 megapixels? Well, acknowledging this blog is going to make a difference in your next purchase.
You don’t need a 45mp phone but choosing a 12mp phone will be more than enough because more megapixels means
- More Data
- Less storage
- Lower processing speed
- Low light photo quality
12 Megapixels: Then vs Now
It is evident that 12mp form 7 years back is not the same anymore there are a lot more complexities involved ranging from dynamic range, colour accuracy, lens quality, image sensor; all the way to faster image processing.
12mp cameras nowadays also use pixel-binning. To understand pixel binning, we have to understand what a pixel. The pixels in question are also known as photo sites, and they’re physical elements on a camera sensor that capture light during photography. Pixel size is usually measured in microns (a millionth of a meter), with anything at or below one micron considered small. The iPhone XS Max, Google Pixel 3, and Galaxy S10 cameras all offer large 1.4-micron pixels.
What is pixel binning in a layman’s term?
It is a process that sees data from four pixels combined into one. To get a deep understanding to consider this situation, think of the camera sensor as a yard and the pixel as buckets collecting rain in the yard. You can either place loads of small buckets in the yard, or several big buckets instead. But pixel-binning is essentially the equivalent of combining all the small buckets into one gigantic bucket when needed.
Myths of higher resolution
Lets us first get introduced with all the resolutions
HD : 1280x720 = 0.9mp
Full HD : 1920x1080 = 2mp
Quad HD : 2560x1440 = 3.6mp
Ultra HD(4K) : 3840x2160 = 8.2mp
You can clearly see that to record UHD videos, all you need is a 10mp and a decent image sensor on your phone, this will keep you from lagging in the game of 4K that has been quite a demand. Speaking of the 48mp, the resolution they capture are not even used properly, all those heavy ( 14mb-16mb ) photos are compressed to kb on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and other platforms. So not settle for a decent 12mp.
Buying 48mp doesn’t mean the end of the word
The 48 mp camera captures more pixels than a 10 or 12mp camera, this unfolds you a better clarity after zooming the images, they also will give a great night mode, portrait shorts and a wide range of editing tools to recreate the images, but not all of its features come handy to a layman.
So, do not drown in the sea of numbers and realize, it is not just the megapixels but the internal software that does the trick, keep all the technicalities in mind and do not get persuaded by the companies to by that you regret later. Do remember that software plays an important part in the equation of photography.
